The romance and marriage of Princess Margaret and photographer Lord Snowdon captivated the country before they married in 1960. Their story has fascinated a new generation through its portrayal in the Netflix drama ‘The Crown’. During their courting days, Snowdon lived in a former coal store in Rotherhithe on the banks of the Thames in south-east London where he also hosted other celebrities of the time such as Marlene Dietrich and Noel Coward. I have chosen to recreate an infamous photograph that Tony took of the Princess on her 29th birthday. It caused huge interest in the media as she appeared to be scantily dressed. She wore a provocative, low-cut, flimsy dress, the resulting risqué photograph aroused the papers and caused some considerable discomfort at the Palace.
