How has Covid-19 affected you?
Professionally, I work independently as a model, self-portrait photographer and digital content creator, and the vast majority of my work is solitary – all I need is a camera, a computer and my phone. The pandemic has limited the occasional outside jobs I do, such as ecommerce photoshoots and other studio work, but has also seen some fashion clients hand the photography part over to me, which I’ve really enjoyed.
Socially, I’m a homebody and international recluse so lockdown was a breeze for me, there just aren’t enough hours in the day, when I’m home. But I do miss travelling. This is the first year I’ve gone without flying in longer than I can remember. At least 15 years, or maybe ever.
What lessons has Covid-19 taught you so far?
As well as showing how beautiful and selfless humanity can be, it’s really held a magnifying glass up to its selfishness and wilful ignorance. It’s been at once fascinating and frustrating to see how people have reacted so passionately to a protective act of wearing a mask or being mindful of each other’s space in public places. It’s also highlighted how much of our lives depends on one other, how interlinked so many aspects of society and the economy are, and how adaptable people can be when they want to be.
Who do you live with?
I live with my mum and younger bro, we’re quiet people and we get on really well. I love it here.
What do you miss the most?
Flying. I love travelling and had intended to go driving in southern Spain the year, as well as a tour of west coast US again, and spending a few months in Australia. Oops!
Tell me a bit about your current situation
At the moment, I’m a little sad that I’ve not been able to create the next issue of the quarterly art magazine I produce, SUM magazine. I started SUM in summer 2019 and each issue contains a feature editorial with one other model, and themed self-portraits of myself, woven around interviews, product reviews, stories, anything really. It’s still growing and evolving as a project but the various lockdowns have meant that I’ve not been able to photograph anyone else in time to put the next issue together. Still, I’m trying not to be too down on myself, these are unique circumstance and there’s really no pressure anyway.
